Sorry I haven't been here sooner, John was fantastic in Pittsburgh! I was surprised how much old stuff he played, I guess I was expecting more from Continuum since he did the preview the night before. But looking at the setlist the next day, I realized he did do six songs from continuum. He actually said about halfway through that he didn't want to play too much new stuff because he was scared. During Gravity they shined a bright light from behind them during "keep me where the light is" and you just saw their silhouettes, which was kinda neat. In Repair was absolutely awesome, the highlight imo, but right afterward he said he went too long and there wasn't time for an encore. Then he just pretended he had gone offstage and come back, said hi, and then did No Such Thing for the encore.
I was a little disappointed that he went on before Sheryl, but understandable knowing he had the Today show the next morning. The crowd seemed to be more excited for her (could be why he felt more comfortable playing older stuff because that got some crowd reaction). It was very much like he was opening for her, instead of co-headlining. Some seats were still empty while he played, he seemed rushed, didn't talk much, and said that they didn't have their confidence back yet. We stayed for all of Sheryl. She was good, but I was hoping for John to come out and play with her at some point and that never happened. She did say near the end that he left because of the Today show appearance, and told everybody to watch it.
It would have been better if he closed the show, but I can't complain, it was still great! Oh! We even saw a little of David Ryan Harris when we first arrived, he was playing side stage until 6:20. He was really really good, now I can see why everyone loves him so much :-D
Joe, I looked for you but never saw you. Did you tape it like you were planning to?

Concert review: Crow, Mayer look, sing great
Saturday, August 26, 2006
By John Young
"John Mayer's got a fabulous-looking audience -- some hot chicks," Sheryl Crow joked with the Post-Gazette Pavilion crowd Thursday night.
"And who hasn't made out to John Mayer's music?" she continued. "I have."
While Crow's comments were likely in jest, they point to a credibility gap from which both she and Mayer have suffered at times. Sure, they're both fine pop tunesmiths and instrumentalists -- but haven't good fortune and their good looks played just as big a role in their ascent of the commercial music ladder?
Both artists performed sets that went a long way toward quieting such critical murmurs of discontent. Mayer played for 75 minutes and Crow for more than 90, including her encore, on the first date of a tour together that will last nearly two months.
If any doubts remain about Mayer's chops as a guitarist, consider this: His band included Robbie McIntosh, one-time axman for Paul McCartney, the Pretenders and Norah Jones. McIntosh took a single solo, on dobro no less, during "Daughters." Otherwise, he bowed to Mayer's lead guitar prowess while simply doing a bit of finger picking or chugging along on chords.
But guitar slingers exist everywhere. What sets Mayer apart is his ever-deepening songwriting ability. The songs he played from his forthcoming album, "Continuum," ranged from the grooving midtempo blues "I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You)" to the upbeat love ballad "The Heart of Life" to the catchy power-pop tune and new single "Waiting on the World to Change."
The anthemic, organ-dominated "In Repair," which Mayer and his seven-piece band melodically riffed on for nearly 10 minutes, may be the best song he's yet composed. "I'm not together, but I'm getting there," went the refrain, on which Mayer is clearly selling himself short.
Crow's set featured a few missteps, mostly minor. It was hard to hear the string quartet she had onstage for most of the show, particularly when her backing quartet was really rocking. She also put four slow songs together about an hour into her show, sucking the life from a previously bounding set. Finally, the two covers in her encore were well-intended but poorly executed; Crow clearly struggled to read a lyric sheet singing Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner" and fudged some of Robert Plant's wailing verses to "Rock and Roll."
For all that, though, Crow's set did a fine job of proving what a knack she has for melody and reminding fans of her staggering number of hits. Crow's voice soared on "Strong Enough" and "Everyday Is a Winding Road" but also expertly negotiated the emotional and lyrical turns of songs like "If It Makes You Happy" and "My Favorite Mistake."
Crow didn't simply play it safe, however. She took a risk in sharing her distaste for the Bush administration. Her sporting a "War Is Not the Answer" T-shirt during her encore was fairly benign. But during her song "Redemption Day," Crow had projected onscreen a number of ironic and poorly phrased quotes by the president. When the song ended with the date "January 21st, 2009" dominating the screens, a smattering of boos were heard among the cheers.
Crow also turned serious in introducing the title song of her last album "Wildflower." While she wrote the song before being diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, Crow said the piece has taken on new meaning, reminding her of "what you make of each day." Crow seemed similarly invested in her lyrics while belting out "Good Is Good," a big, aching ballad from "Wildflower."
So forget about the celebrities Crow has dated and how loudly teen girls scream at the sight of Mayer. What matters is the music, and both played it boldly and well.

John Mayer and Sheryl Crow launched their tour together last week at P-G Pavilion, and everyone was wondering if the two music stars would join each other on stage.
Turns out they didn't. And that's a bummer, because they're both engaging performers, though both had a few spotty moments last Thursday, especially Crow.
Mayer took the stage first, with full command of his velvety voice. Though in terms of stage presence, he seemed to be timid initially. The tousle-haired singer, with his multi-colored sneakers, admitted to a crowd of 8,500 that he hadn't regained his confidence yet.
But when he delved elegantly into "Daughters," he got his groove back, paving the way for a batch of bluesy pop-rock songs stamped by Mayer's nimble and vastly underrated guitar work. A few of those songs turned into spirited jams, causing his 75-minute set to stretch longer than expected, so he had to dispense with the clichéd silliness of an encore.
Crow would have been wise to skip an encore, too, and you'll read why in a minute.
To her credit, Crow's show started in high gear. In a white sleeveless top with matching slacks, she looked smashing. Her band sounded sharp whipping through songs like "My Favorite Mistake," "A Change (Would Do You Good)," "The First Cut is the Deepest" and the rollicking "Steve McQueen."
But she squashed the party vibe when she did a song backed by a video screen listing far-from-scintillating quotes from the Bush Administration. "God bless America!" an angry man shouted from Section 6. A smattering of boos with a slightly louder round of cheers greeted the song's conclusion. Crow should leave the politics to Neil Young.
Fans just to want to hear her sing hits like "Soak Up the Sun," "All I Want to Do" and "Every Day is a Winding Road" the three songs with which she solidly ended her set.
But then came the ill-advised encore, where she repeatedly flubbed the lines to Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner." Somehow she fell behind by line, which threw off the whole song. Having changed into a "War is Not the Answer" T-shirt, she got back on track with the final song, Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll," though that song has been done to death, and so the concert ended anti-climactically

Joe, I looked for you but never saw you. Did you tape it like you were planning to?
i got there a little late, but just in time for Mayer... thought we knew a shortcut but we just messed ourselves up gettin there... and i didn't record it like i was planning, i didnt feel like bringing any extra stuff...heh
what section were you in? i was in section 6.
Home Wife- 08-28-2006
We were in section 5, so we weren't far from you! I was probably looking around for you during Mat Kearney so if you were late that explains why I didn't see you. Someone posted their recording in the Pittsburgh thread at msm but I haven't gotten it yet...I'd like to hear all the shows but don't want hubby to complain that I have too much mayer on the pc

Lauri, it sounds like you had fun!
I am so dern ready I can't stand it. This week is dragging by...
I am really hoping for a lot of "C". I am addicted to it now. But I will gladly take the old stuff. Clarity, I am hoping, will be a part of my show.
How were your seats? Did you have a pretty good view of those assless pants???
Home Wife- 08-28-2006
Eh, the view wasn't so great from our seats...thank goodness for those close-ups on the big screens! But it was still a great time, just went way too fast. He opened with Clarity, always a joy to hear live. And because I fell instantly in love with Continuum, hearing the new songs felt just like the old ones, even though some I had only heard for the first time the night before the show. Amazing.
Joe- 08-28-2006

its a long story if were to tell everything, but i wrote this song today, i need to know if it's too "soft" or whatever, any kind of comment is good.... whether u think its bad or good...

Arrrrrrgh! I have got to have Clarity!!!!
I am so psyched for Sunday!!!!
Home Wife- 08-30-2006
If not Clarity, then maybe you'll be lucky enough to get Belief...that would be awesome too.
Joe, your lyrics are good, I like! It's sad, but optimistic too. And methinks I see a little Continuum influence in there ;)

yes, Continuum is a big influence here, i actually was listening to bold as love/dreaming with a broken heart/in repair when i wrote this song (in my car, when i was down at the beach on a rainy day)
there may be another song or two that could come out of me soon that again will be influenced by continuum (for the most part)
